ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Newark Police Department returned to its 24-hour coverage after staffing issues. The police department returned to that schedule on Monday after several officers completed the police academy and some finished field training. Police also said they accepted the lateral transfer of an experienced officer. In July 2023, Newark police had to shift to a 20-hour coverage schedule. The retirement of an investigator and officer, multiple officers out on injury, and another resigning. After some officers had to work overtime, the police department had to make difficult decisions. They changed the schedule, which led to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and New York State Police to assist. Now that staffing is looking better, Chief Richard Martin thanks those agencies for their help. "We cannot thank the New York State Police and Wayne County Sheriff’s Office enough for all of their assistance in covering those four hours each night during this time," Chief Martin said in a statement. "We sincerely appreciate their service to our citizens during a time when they were also dealing with staffing issues. I also cannot emphasize enough the amount of extra duty that our own officers worked just to cover the 20 hours per day.” The schedule changes and staffing issues lasted at least 16 months.
