Harris, Trump make late appeals voters at dueling North Carolina rallies

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — In the final days leading up to Election Day, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump were in North Carolina Wednesday. At dueling rallies in central N.C., Trump and Harris made some of their final arguments to voters.
Harris rallied in Raleigh, speaking to supporters at Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek first. Trump then made remarks at his campaign rally at the Rocky Mount Event Center shortly after.

The flurry of visits by the candidates in recent weeks shows how critical the campaigns see the Tar Heel State. With almost 3.4 million ballots cast during early voting so far, there are still several million votes up for grabs. Harris and Trump are largely competing for registered unaffiliated voters who have become a significant portion of the voter pool.
Trump rally takeaways
In his speech Wednesday, spanning an hour and 26 minutes, Trump argued Americans can’t afford another four years of Democrats in office.
"I'm here today with a message of hope for all Americans, with your votes in this election," he said.
Trump spent a great deal of time comparing himself to the Biden-Harris administration and making a pledge to put Americans on a different path.
"I will end inflation," Trump said. "I will stop the massive invasion of criminals into our country. I will bring back that thing called the American Dream."
Trump has three things he wants to focus on if elected for a second term next week.
"Number one is if the economy, number two is inflation, number three is what they've done to our border, what they have done to our country," he said. "They call it immigration. It's not immigration. It's horrible, it's horrible."
Supporters waited in line for hours before former President Donald Trump’s afternoon speech.
He promised them change, something voters say they want to see.
“Especially up at the border, it’s very concerning, just letting people in,” Ethan Edens, one supporter, said.
“I think he’s going to help my generation be able to afford homes, because I can’t afford a home right now,” another supporter, Hunter Bulluck, said.
Some voters specifically pointed to Vice President Kamala Harris, saying they don’t want to see her in the Oval Office.
“Nothing’s been done, and I don’t think she’s going to do anything, she didn’t do anything while she had the chance, so why would we believe she’ll do it now,” Jackie Johnson of North Carolina said.
Trump echoed that, calling the Biden-Harris administration the worst in the country’s history.
“This election is a choice between whether we’ll have a.. four more years, think of this.. four more years of gross incompetence, the most corrupt horrible people.. these are horrible people,” he said to the crowd.
Trump also mentioned comments from President Joe Biden where he appeared to call Trump supporters garbage. In response, Trump said you can’t lead America if you don’t love Americans.
Harris rally takeaways
Harris, in a 20-minute speech, told her supporters it was time for a new generation of leaders in America and if given the chance, she was ready to offer that leadership as the next president. She spoke about policy but also focused on connecting with voters.
"If you give me the chance to fight on your behalf as president, there is nothing in this world that will stand in my way," she said. "It is time for a new chapter where we stop with the pointing fingers at each other and instead let us lock arms with one another knowing we have so much more in common than what separates us.
"I am not looking to score political points," Harris said. "I'm looking to make progress and I will listen to experts."
Harris said this election is one of the biggest races in a long time.
"We're fighting for our democracy," she said. "Unlike Donald Trump, I don't believe people who disagree with me are the enemy. He wants to put them in jail. I'll give them a seat at the table."
The vice president pledged to work with Democrats, Republicans, and third parties.
"I pledge to be a president for all Americans and to always put country above party and self," Harris said.
Supporters showed out with enthusiasm in Raleigh, seeming to all be on board that Harris can pull off a win in the state which has turned red in 10 of the past 12 presidential elections dating back to 1976.
One voter, a student from Duke, talked about the importance of the youth vote in this election.
"There's a different aura about campus right now. People are more excited, people want to take part in this election and I, along with my many other Duke students here, really want to be as active as possible and get the word out," he said.
Other supporters at the rally pointed to Harris' charisma and engagement with voters as a means of getting more youth inspired to cast a ballot.
"I also think a lot of people just really don't want to see Donald Trump go back into office," another young voter said.
