FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) A large number of heavily armed police positioned themselves near a high-rise apartment building northwest of downtown Fort Wayne early Thursday morning. After more than an hour, police took a man into custody. At around 6 a.m. police were sent to the North Highlands apartments located on St. Marys Avenue just south of West State Boulevard. Emergency dispatchers said police are involved in an investigation, but did not elaborate. A WANE 15 videographer after arriving on the scene said there were two police drones in the air and officers were told to form a perimeter. An armored vehicle arrived a short time later. After 7 a.m., a loud boom could be heard, followed by police on a megaphone who said the following, "...you are under arrest, we are not leaving. This is the Fort Wayne SWAT Team. Exit now." An armored vehicle can be seen near North Highlands apartments on the morning of October 31, 2024. A short time later, police walked a man out of the apartment building in handcuffs. Police then began clearing the scene. A Fort Wayne Police Department Sergeant said officers were looking for a suspect wanted for a prior investigation. The suspect, who has not been identified, initially refused to come out of the building, but eventually surrendered peacefully.
