LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — The city of Lexington hosted its annual Clean Slate Expungement Clinic Wednesday. “It automatically gives people a perception about you, and they don’t even know your story,” Chief Equity Implementation Officer Tiffany Brown said. After five years, if those with a criminal record have had no additional charges, they qualify for expungement. The Clean Slate Expungement Clinic gives people the opportunity to meet with an attorney while also looking for a job. “You’re more likely to commit another crime if you cannot have a job that supports you and your family,” Brown said. Which is why the city hosts the clinic. It’s proven to be a mutual benefit for both Lexington and people looking for a clean slate. “That’s why we do what we do, it makes our community safer, but it also gives folks hope that they can achieve and go beyond what their past history says about them,” she said. Over the past six years, this expungement clinic has helped over 1,300 people receive free services to work toward cleaning their record. “While there are a lot of expungement clinics that give a lot of legal information, this one truly is removing the financial barrier as well as connecting the jobs and other resources,” Brown said. The goal of the clinic is to help end the cycle of crime and poverty while giving generations hope through new jobs and resources.
