Reggie Jackson says he outbid John Fisher for A’s in 2005

(KRON) -- MLB legend Reggie Jackson nearly bought the Oakland A's in 2005 when they were instead sold to now-owner John Fisher, Jackson said in a recent interview with Front Office Sports.
Jackson said his group outbid Fisher's group by $25 million, but the MLB commissioner at the time, Bud Selig, did not help his deal go through. Instead, the franchise went to Fisher, putting it on a path that eventually spelled its exit from Oakland.
Jackson had a 21-year, Hall of Fame MLB career that included 10 years with the A's. He was on the A's from 1972-74 when they won three straight World Series titles.

Jackson said the he was highest bidder when Fisher bought the team in 2005. Jackson said Fisher bought the team for $140-160 million. Forbes lists the purchase price as $180 million.
"I was high bidder and willing to pay $25 million more than any other bid," he said. "But our commissioner didn't see fit to present our offer. He asked me to go through him, and it never really got done."
Jackson said the organization would probably not be "where it is today" if he was involved in ownership.
"I'm disappointed where they are, I'm disappointed that they're leaving, I'm disappointed the way it's handled," he said. "I'm still an Oakland fan."
When asked why his deal was not helped through, Jackson said "we've always wondered that." He noted the lack of minority owners in MLB.
Since retiring, Jackson has worked with the New York Yankees and Houston Astros. In the interview with Front Office Sports, Jackson said he does not know Fisher and Dave Kaval well.
