ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Some claim Trump's rally scheduled for Thursday in Albuquerque is getting political but not for reasons you might think. There is growing controversy Tuesday night over where thousands of Trump rally-goers will be allowed to park. The campaign would then shuttle people from the lot to the rally which is being held at CSI Aviation near the Sunport. But those plans unraveled on Tuesday after the state, which owns the parking lot, said it was not allowed. "Their [Live Nation] contract is for the amphitheater. So, either they didn't read the lease they had with us or they wanted to make me kind of the fall guy for this situation because this is not of my creation," said Stephanie Garcia Richard, New Mexico Commissioner of Public Lands. "If Live Nation were to have an event at the amphitheater themselves and maybe schedule the rally at the amphitheater then the parking lot could be used." The State's Public Land Office sent KRQE News 13 a copy of its lease agreement with Live Nation. Garcia Richard said the company does not have the right to contract the parking lot to events not held at the amphitheater. She said a use like this would've required negotiations far in advance for things like payment, security, and liability. "We heard about this today, nothing has been negotiated in terms of how the State Land Office could be paid for the use of our land. Remember, we are revenue-generating and need to be kept from being held liable should anything occur," said Garcia Richard. But, New Mexico Republicans are not buying it. "This just doesn't pass the smell test," said Republican State Representative Jim Townsend of Artesia. "This is clearly a political process." He notes the parking lot has been allowed to be used before and gave the example of when it was used for a church gathering that did not have an event at Isleta. However, the State's Land Office said that the event had terms negotiated far in advance. Garcia Richard maintained this is business, not politics. "If I would have authorized it for one party and not another, for one candidate and not another, I could see that being politically motivated. This is just something, in general, we do not do," said Garcia Richard. "For the lack of a better word, I'll just say bologna. That's not true and I don't believe it for a minute," said Rep. Townsend. In a scathing post on social media platform X, the Republican Party of New Mexico blasted the move and asked the public to call Garcia Richard. They claim the lease does extend to the parking lot and called the move "sheer, naked, bitter partisanship." This comes after accusations the city of Albuquerque and Mayor Tim Keller also tried to block the Trump campaign from initially using the Albuquerque Convention Center for the rally. But, a spokesperson with the city said the Convention Center was unable to accommodate the event because of "major sewage repairs" that have been planned since last month. A spokesperson with the city also spoke out against City Councilor Dan Lewis, who accused Mayor Tim Keller of blocking the campaign at a city meeting. It’s highly unethical that Lewis tried to cancel vital repairs and pressure staff for political gain, but now he’s also spreading false grievances. We support the Convention Center and the business decisions they make about operations and bookings. Staci Drangmeister, Spokesperson, Mayor's Office Now a big question is, where will the thousands of rally-goers park for Thursday's event? A spokesperson with the Trump campaign told KRQE News 13 that they are scrambling to secure more parking locations and will email rally-goers as the event gets closer. KRQE News 13 reached out to Bernalillo County to clarify its role in the lease with Live Nation but did not hear back in time for broadcast. KRQE News 13 also reached out to Live Nation for this story but did not hear back in time for broadcast. Trump's rally is scheduled for noon on Thursday. He is then expected to head to Henderson, Nevada for a campaign rally later that afternoon.
