In February 2023, one of their dogs mauled 64-year-old Stanley Hartt and killed him. Two months ago, Montoya pled guilty to possessing a dangerous dog leading to death and her involuntary manslaughter charge was dropped.
According to court documents, law enforcement found the dog, who has since been euthanized, had a history of aggressive behavior and bit two other people on separate occasions. Montoya will serve her sentence at the Quay County Detention Center.
