When will 911 callers be able to video chat with dispatchers in RI?

SCITUATE, R.I. (WPRI) — Rhode Islanders could soon have another way of communicating with dispatchers in an emergency situation.
Rhode Island E-911 is actively exploring the feasibility of giving callers the option to share real-time video with dispatchers.
"It's certainly something that's on our radar," Rhode Island E-911 Director Arthur Martins said. "We're always looking for ways to enhance our ability to meet the community's needs."
Martins told 12 News he's aware of the new technology, which allows callers to video chat with dispatchers, that's being utilized in other states.
"We understand the importance of technology," he said. "It's most important in the hands of the first responders."
Martins explained that Rhode Island E-911 fields calls from across the state and transfers them over to local departments. In order to make emergency video calls a reality in the Ocean State, Martins said Rhode Island E-911 would have to make sure every call center in the state is properly equipped.
"We're not prepared to do that just yet because there's a lot of coordination that's going to be involved," Martins said.
Though Rhode Island is still a ways out from introducing emergency video calls, Martin said dispatchers still have a number of other tools at their disposal.
Martins said Rhode Island E-911 started using the "what3words" app earlier this year, which allows dispatchers to accurately pinpoint a caller's location.
It's not just the technology, but also the dispatchers that use it. Rhode Island E-911's Jim Chellel said their staff is trained to use a number of systems simultaneously to assist callers as quickly as possible.
"We're investing in the personnel and the technology," Chellel added. "State taxpayers and visitors that use 911 on their worst day can have faith in us that we are going to give them the most accurate and the most professional service."
Martins told 12 News it will be at least another year before emergency video calls are possible in the Ocean State.
