Bail hearing begins for Providence teacher accused of sexual assault
Oct 29, 2024
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The victim in an alleged sexual assault and child pornography case involving a Providence middle school teacher testified in court on Tuesday.
Joseph Gannon, 50, has been charged with one count of first-degree sexual assault and one count of producing or transferring child pornography.
Gannon has been held without bail since his arraignment on Sep. 23. (No plea was entered at his arraignment last month, as is typical with felony charges in district court.)
A bail hearing began on Tuesday afternoon, where a judge did not allow cameras to record the proceedings. Gannon was escorted into the courtroom in handcuffs wearing a dress shirt and khakis with his hair tied back.

The alleged victim was 15-years-old when she said she and Gannon began a sexual relationship. She's now 20.
Prosecutors established that Gannon taught the victim science in 7th and 8th grade and supervised her free period class. He also led an afterschool gardening club, which she participated in.
The victim testified that she was suffering from physical abuse by a family member. She said Gannon did not report the abuse or offer his help, but that she leaned on him to vent about the situation.

The victim told prosecutors she had "very low" self worth at the time, and had been contemplating suicide.
"I felt very, very worthless," she told prosecutors on Tuesday.
The victim said she started emailing with Gannon after she graduated Nathanael Middle School, where Gannon teaches science, to continue to confide in him about her home life.
"We were kinda close,” she said.
The victim explained that she went back to the middle school to visit when she was a freshman and exchanged phone numbers with Gannon.
She said it wasn't too long before he started asking her sexually charged questions, and that they eventually they made a plan to meet up.
When the victim walked into the Providence Public Safety Complex to report what happened, years later, she told police Gannon invited her to his house in Warwick in August 2019. She told prosecutors Gannon picked her up at her home in Providence and drove her to his home because he knew his wife and young children would not be there.
The victim provided graphic testimony on the stand, pausing at several points to cry. Gannon visibly shook his head in disagreement during certain parts of her testimony.
The victim told prosecutors that during her first sexual encounter with Gannon, she said she was in pain and she told him to stop, but he refused.
Court concluded for the day before the victim could finish her testimony or be cross-examined. The victim ran out in tears, and Gannon was taken back into custody.
The hearing will resume on Monday at noon. The Providence police detective assigned to the case is also slated take the stand, where more details about the child pornography charge may come to light.
Target 12 obtained court documents that explained the victim also told police the three-year long ordeal involved sexual encounters at Gannon’s Warwick home, a Seekonk hotel and “secluded areas” in Providence, including a local cemetery.
She said Gannon would record their sexual encounters and she later found the content on a sexually explicit website.
The victim said she ended the relationship when she was 18 and asked for the illicit photos and videos back. She said Gannon “refused" to give them to her.
Earlier this month, police searched Gannon’s home, taking four cell phones, four hard drives, one PC, one iPod and 13 iPads, three of which were labeled as Providence city property. Police also seized a safe that contained several documents, including Gannon’s teaching certificate.
Gannon was placed on paid administrative leave following his arrest, but on Oct. 16 was suspended without pay, according to Providence Public Schools spokesperson Jay G. Wegimont.
