New Summerfield town manager speaks for 1st time after mass resignations

SUMMERFIELD, N.C. (WGHP) -- For the first time, we're hearing from the new town manager of Summerfield.
It's an opportunity Charles Rollins, better known as Twig, couldn't pass up.
Before starting his new job as the Summerfield town manager on Oct. 13, Rollins says he was previously the town manager of Magnolia, North Carolina.
"It was a three-interview process for me. They [town leaders] were very candid and transparent when they got ... to the end and made feel comfortable that it would be a good place for me to come to and work and, hopefully, retire from," Rollins said.
In May before Rollins arrived, a member of the town staff sent an email to FOX8 that announced the staff, including seven staffers and two seasonal employees, had resigned.
In a statement, the staff decried the Summerfield town council’s decision to oust former Summerfield Town Manager Scott Whitaker after 12 years of service as his wife battles cancer.
It was a mass exodus that Rollins says he was well aware of.
"I wouldn't necessarily call it a predicament I would call it a challenge. But there's a lot of great things in this community I'm really excited about," Rollins said.
The main objective he's focused on achieving is filling vacant job positions within the town hall.
"I filled the planning director, the parks and recreation director, the town assistant/events planner. I just interviewed for the town clerk ... I made an offer, and the finance officer is the last piece," Rollins said.
Another hot topic is the de-annexation of the town after the state house approved a bill to de-annex hundreds of acres of land in Summerfield to allow local developer David Couch to build on.
Rollins says he and Couch have not met each other yet.
"But I'm moving on to the other project and priorities and goals that the town board wants to accomplish," Rollins said.
