Early voting allows people to take their pick of the most location convenient to vote in their county. Early reports from North Carolina show low turnout in young voters. Time is running out for voters to cast their ballots. Mad Miles Run Club teamed up with Urban League Young Professionals of Central Carolinas for Run to the Polls to help encourage people to vote while getting a good workout. Katelyn Peterson was one of hundreds of runners at Mad Miles Tuesday evening dashing through Camp North End proudly wearing an “I Voted Early” sticker. “We all have to rally together to make sure that we are doing what we need to for each other for our families, for all of us as a society,” Peterson said Camp North End is one of 33 early voting sites in Mecklenburg County. Mad Miles meets at Camp North End for a two mile run every Tuesday night at 6:30. “We love that Mad Miles brings out close to 500 to 700 people each and every week so being able to leverage what they bring together,” Kyle Brown, President of Urban League Young Professionals of Central Carolina said. “Directly having a polling site here, we think it’s an opportune time to push that forward and have people be able to come out and vote.” Latest data shows more than 3 million voters in North Carolina have already cast their ballots early, but that’s only about 40% of the registered voter population. “I think there’s a lot of areas of misinformation that our community is facing at this point. So we want to be a source of truth,” Brown said. “The Urban League has always been a group that we’ve leaned on for truth and for advocacy across the community and we feel as though we can be a truth source to help get young people out.” Data from the last presidential election in 2020 shows the lowest turnout in voters ages 18-25. Mecklenburg County voter Trevor Gilliam voted early Tuesday night, he says many young people don’t understand the power of their vote. “I think it’s at my age [31] and maybe like 25ish to make that change and get people to start understanding what our actual right is and help educate  keep it going and making sure we get the right people in office,” Gilliam said. “We can make the changes that we actually want to see instead of having the same people complain over and over so, it makes a difference.” With less than a week left until the election, advocates hope people exercise their bodies and right to vote. “Bring your friends, do it together, do it in a way that you can make that change and also like make it an activity,” Peterson said. “Early voting allows you to do it at any time, at any place as well. So there’s also no reason not to.” Urban league says at least 100 voters cast a ballot at the event Tuesday night. Early voting sites are open until 7:30 on weekdays. The last day of early voting is Saturday, November 2nd and the early voting sites will close at 3pm. If you miss early voting, you’ll have one last chance to vote at your assigned precinct on Tuesday, November 5th.
