SC Dept. of Transportation proposes safety developments on US 17 and Septima P. Clark Parkway

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) -- The South Carolina Department of Transportation is working to make Lowcountry roads safer.
SCDOT wants to hear from residents about how they can make the area safer for people living in the low country.
The roadway department has chosen the corridor of U.S 17 and Septima P. Clark Parkway because it has been prone to accidents.
Cynthia, who lives in one of the areas involved in this project, says there have been many accidents near her house.
And she came to the meeting hoping they'd make the streets safer and slower.
"I would no more cross that street than I would fly to the moon and I live right there. I would love to go over to the other side of town but that's not the way I can go, I have to go around and go up King street, so I don't have to cross 6 lanes of traffic," said Cynthia Odell, a resident of the area.
The recommendations for improvements on the corridor include sign and signal upgrades, pedestrian crossing improvements, and reducing roadway safety hazards.
The goal is to reduce and prevent crashes for vehicles and pedestrians along the corridor.
"This is a busy area already we know there is a lot of foot traffic development happening in the City of Charleston more folks walking or bicycling or driving through this corridor and so it's important we take all that into consideration as we plan for projects like these," said Kelly Moore, the Director of Public Engagement of SCDOT.
Cynthia said she hopes in addition to the improvements planned she hopes the department will take into consideration the speed of the drivers.
"I think the more input they receive the better the project will be," said Odell.
The project is expected to go into construction in 2026.
"They'll continue with the design part of the project through 2025 and we're really just kicking things off here with the public involvement piece," said Moore.
The project is still accepting feedback online here.
