Montgomery County voters concerned over ballot drop box security

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) – Ballots inside two drop boxes were burned in Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington on Monday morning. Some people say this has caused them to worry about the security of ballot boxes in Montgomery County.
Officials said three ballots were damaged in Portland, and hundreds were destroyed in Vancouver. Thousands of miles away in Montgomery County, people call what happened “unpatriotic and un-American.”
“I think it is unconscionable for somebody to try to destroy somebody’s vote,” Takoma Park resident, Kathleen Long, said. “It’s voter suppression of the worst kind, and I honestly don’t understand it.”

Mary Rooker, who also lives in Takoma Park, was displeased.
“Why are you wanting to deprive other voters of their vote? It’s just incomprehensible to me," she said.
Rooker said because of what happened out west, she’s changing the way she casts her vote.
“I’m going to go do voting in-person at the Early Voting Center in Silver Spring,” she said. “That’s my next bike stop, but I could drop it off right here, but no.”
Montgomery County Board of Elections public relations officer Gilberto Zelaya said the Board coordinates with law enforcement and security agencies to protect voters’ ballots.
“Months prior to an election we work in conjunction. It’s a delicate balance of communication with the different agencies, with our poll workers, with the State Board of Elections," Zelaya said.
He said they also make sure ballots don’t sit in the drop boxes for long.
“We also do daily pick-up including on Sundays so when the post office is closed, we’re working," Zelaya said. "On top of that, we do daily pick-ups twice a day.”

Voters are hoping these measures keep their ballots safe, so their votes can be counted and their voices can be heard.
“You can disagree with someone but you don’t destroy their ballot,” Long said.
Zelaya said mail-in ballots can be taken to one of the 14 Early Voting Centers in the county.
