WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- D.C. activists leading the boycott against fast-casual chain &pizza announced on Tuesday that they are "pausing all actions" against the establishment. The group, referred to as "The Knot in DC Coalition," said the decision came after a meeting with &pizza CEO Mike Burns and his local leadership team on Monday, in which they claim Burns took "full accountability for the concerns raised and committed to a restorative process deeply rooted in the DC community and culture." At this time we are pausing all actions as we negotiate next steps. We stand firm in our commitment to accountability, community, and peace. The coalition is committed to working towards a resolution that prioritizes humanity and justice." Statement from The Knot In DC Coalition Outrage ensued from activists and community members across the District last week following &pizza's release of the controversial "Marion Berry Knots," which resembled the name of D.C.'s late former mayor, Marion Barry. Barry was at the center of a crack cocaine possession scandal in the 1990s. The marketing campaign for the knots made several references and innuendos to drug use, with phrases such as "These knots will blow you away" and "Our classic knots got a bump." Marion Barry’s wife calls ‘Marion Berry Knots’ at &pizza ‘racist and disrespectful’ The knots were also pictured next to small piles of sugar, staged in a way that appeared similar to cocaine. The Knot in DC Coalition said on Tuesday that it is working with the Marion Barry estate and &pizza to create a resolution that addresses the community's concerns over the marketing campaign. "We recognize that true restorative relations require mutual input and agreement. We value collaboration and look forward to working with &pizza toward a productive process for all parties that are impacted by their harmful and hurtful actions," the coalition said.
