FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - More than $25 million in grant awards has been awarded to the Fresno and Madera regions to combat homelessness, Governor Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday. Newsom provided 37 grant awards totaling more than $827 million in what his office says is to help more than 100 local communities and organizations to create long-term solutions to address homelessness. The Fresno and Madera regions will receive $25.76 million and the Kings and Tulare regions will receive $4.14 million. In a press conference on Tuesday, Newsom said that he has been working closely with Fresno's Mayor Jerry Dyer and says that the city has been doing an outstanding job. Dyer says that it's always nice to be recognized by the governor and his office for some of the good work that they are doing in the city. He says every single day in Fresno teams go out to make sure to have clean areas and areas free of the unsheltered population. "The fact is, the state dollars have been supporting many of our efforts that have led to our successes and the fact that we have been able to shelter over 7,000 in the last three and half years," Dyer said. "Over half of those to be able to transition to permanent housing tells us and certainly the governor is aware of it, that we're making remarkable success." Dyer says that it's one thing to displace people and it is another thing to offer them services and resources. According to Dyer, the governor and he agreed on how to address the homeless population. Dyer says when Newsom recognizes Fresno's work he is most likely to award the city, and he has. He says that Newsom is supportive of the legislation and has provided the funding that is needed to combat homelessness. "The money that is provided to us from the state, has originated from the local level, the tax dollars. So it is important those tax dollars be returned to local jurisdictions," Dyer said. Dyer says the funding is critical to be provided to the city. According to the governor's office, as a condition of receiving the funding, the awardees must agree to increased accountability, transparency, and compliance measures.
