Small businesses rally in San Jose to support Prop 36
Oct 29, 2024
SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) -- Proposition 36 is one of the more controversial measures on California’s ballot. Opponents say it would lead to mass incarceration, but supporters of the measure say it will improve public safety.
On Tuesday morning, a gathering of small business owners, mostly 7-Eleven franchisees, rallied in San Jose, calling on voters to approve Prop 36. Supporters of the measure said that small businesses have been hit hard by retail theft in recent years and that they are in need of relief.
If passed, Prop 36 would allow felony charges and increased sentences for certain drug and theft crimes which are currently considered misdemeanors. The passage of Prop 36 would reverse parts of Prop 47, which was passed by voters in 2014.

The California Legislative Analyst's Office says that if Prop 36 is approved, it could result in more people being sent to prison and an increased workload for state courts. The analyst’s office also says that approval could result in increased costs, possibly tens of millions to hundreds of millions of dollars per year.
Recent polling has shown that a majority of California voters support Prop 36, and those at Tuesday’s rally say that, despite the potential repercussions, they believe the measure is a step in the right direction.
