AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) - Brush Fire Warnings continue in Massachusetts as over 180 fires burned in October alone. Massachusetts-Wildfire-Activity-Briefing-10-29-24Download Wildfires stretching over 100 acres are still burning in Salem, Middleton, and Devens, with more room to grow over the week. This comes as all but 3 counties in Massachusetts experience a stage 1 drought. Chief Fire Warden Dave Celino explained one wildfire trend in recent years. VIEW HERE: Live Massachusetts Brush Fire Map "The map always has some trends and it follows population, and so regardless of whether in the Western part the state where we have certainly much more open landscape and we have more terrain in the eastern half of the state we still have open space," said Celino. Some point to the dry weather as the cause of these fires, but there are other factors to consider. Trees and plants without leaves this time of year is all pretty common but what's not common is temperatures well into the 70s and 80s and if this continues to spark more wildfires, we could see significant consequences. Smoke from these fires brought dangerous air quality earlier today. Bob McConnell with the EPA's air quality branch told 22News the danger of not addressing fire concerns. "When you do these prolonged exposures to elevated levels of p.m. that more and more people have adverse impacts," said McConnell, Manager of the Air Quality Branch.
