(WWLP) - Halloween can be fun, but it can also be a dangerous time for kids. 22News is working for you with the dangers of Halloween and how you can make sure your kids stay safe.
On Halloween, the scariest things aren't monsters or ghosts, health officials say its cars. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, twice as many children are hit by cars, while walking on Halloween than any day of the year.
"Costumes are getting very elaborate this year, theirs darker colors, less visibility so it's important that children are visible to those driving," said Cooley Dickinson Hospital Emergency Medicine Physician, Dr. Sunny Shukla.
But there are ways to ensure a safe and injury free Halloween. "While we love the costumes, but making sure it's bright or reflective or they're carrying glows sticks or flashlights things to make it easier for drivers to see them," added AMR Operations Manager, Kim D'Angelo.
Health officials say trick-or-treating is best done in groups, no matter how safe your neighborhood may be. Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult, especially when crossing a street.
"Utlize sidewalks when you can, don't walk in the streets, the natural tendency is to run to different places to get your candy because everyone is excited but we also have to be careful at the same time," expressed Dr. Shukla.
It is also recommended to not wear costumes that cover your face for better visual. Instead opt for non-toxic makeup or decorative hats and wear good-fitting costumes and shoes to avoid trips and falls.
Officials also say it's important to remind children to only visit homes with their indoor and outdoor lights on and to never enter a stranger's house.
Drivers are also encouraged to also take precautions. "You know drive slow through your neighborhoods, be aware there will be children out walking around. As the operaters pay more close attention to what is going on around your surroundings," Chicopee Police spokesperson, Travis Odiorne.
Police say to watch for children darting between parked cars or running across the street without looking. It is also encouraged to use your headlights while driving and avoid distractions behind the wheel. This will help to ensure the safety of yourself and others on Halloween night.
