SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) - A South Hadley couple didn't cancel their wedding when a foot of snow was headed toward Massachusetts, 13 years ago. Do you remember the Massachusetts October snowstorm of 2011? Tuesday marks the historic October 2011 snowstorm in Massachusetts that cut power to thousands of residents for days and close to a week in spots, over a foot of snow blanketed the area. That resulted in major tree damage and shortages of food and gas. A woman from South Hadley told 22News that was her wedding day. The ceremony was held in Westfield however, the reception was in Berkshire County. The snow just started to fall as the couple left for their nearly 40-mile trip to Lenox in a limo. The newlywed said, "By the time we left, it was a complete whiteout. On the way to Lenox, our limo fishtailed into a guardrail on the MassPike." Adding that her uncle was able to rescue them with his pickup truck. Memories were surely made during this wedding, as guests were white-knuckle driving, even picture groomsmen in their tuxes pushing cars that couldn't make it up the hill! The Berkshires got around two feet of snow during that October storm. The guests, staying at the resort, were lucky because it didn't lose power, "the silver lining," said the newlywed. "It certainly wasn’t the fall wedding I’d envisioned, but it was definitely memorable!" Dig into your camera roll or Facebook memories and share your historic photos with 22News, email [email protected]. The snow that fell was so wet and stuck to all the trees that still had so many leaves on them, creating tons of damage. It still stands as our most significant October snowstorm since records began in Chicopee in the 1940s.
