Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg talks train traffic, improvements coming to area

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) - The Biden-Harris Administration has announced $26.5 million in railroad improvements coming to our area, specifically to Colonel's Islands Terminal in Brunswick.
The project, called the Colonel's Island Rail Improvements Project, was made in partnership with the Georgia Ports Authority.
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg told News 3 the project will bring 11,000 jobs to the Coastal Empire and streamline good-shipping nationwide.
"Right now, a lot of work needs to be done with moving the vehicles onto trains that are going to take them around the country. We're helping to fix that," said Buttigieg.

The administration is fixing the issue, he says, by adding approximately 23,735 feet of track to the area, stemming from the Colonel's Islands Terminal. The terminal will see upgrades to the Myd Harris Yard and will get an additional new yard.
This comes as train traffic is a growing concern in the Coastal Empire, with another hour-plus-long stall during rush hour Tuesday morning at the President Street crossing in Savannah — at least the second in a month.
Buttigieg says the administration is aware of the problem, locally and nationwide, and is working to address it.
"Another thing we've been working on is the Railroad Crossing Elimination Program," said Buttigieg. "We've never had it before, but it's part of the Biden-Harris infrastructure package. We've already addressed 400 locations across the country because it can be a headache. I know what it's like to be stuck waiting for those mile-long, 2-mile-long trains to go by."

As part of the program, Buttigieg said the Biden-Harris Administration is building more overpasses and underpasses.
"This is something that's affected communities across the country, and we're finally doing something about it with the investments that will replace or reconfigure some of these crossings so that goods can get to where they need to go, and to take care of people at the same time," said Buttigieg.
Georgia is one of five states seeing new railroad improvements at the behest of the Biden-Harris Administration.
