Winds die down tonight, colder air moving in
Oct 29, 2024
Highs winds Tuesday afternoon will die down overnight. Much colder air continues to move in overnight, bringing some areas their first freeze of the season by Thursday morning.
It is a very windy day across New Mexico with wind gusts over 60 mph at times in the Sacramento Mountains and Roswell. This has caused areas of blowing dust in these areas, along with the I-10 corridor. A cold front is also sweeping across the state, keeping high temperatures in the 50s in northwest parts of New Mexico. This front will sweep across the rest of the state overnight, which will also help the winds settle down overnight. Calmer conditions are in store by Wednesday morning, but it will be a chilly start to the day. High temperatures will be cooler than average Wednesday afternoon, which will be the coolest air so far this season. Winds will be a little breezy again in the afternoon, but not nearly as windy as Tuesday.
Many areas will see their first freeze of the season Thursday morning, and that includes the Rio Grande Valley from Santa Fe to Albuquerque, down to Socorro. This is where a Freeze Warning is in effect for Wednesday night. Parts of eastern New Mexico are under a Freeze Watch where temperatures will fall to as low as 31°. Temperatures start a warming trend Thursday afternoon, but highs for Halloween will still be cooler than normal, with a cool evening for Trick-or-Treaters.
A warming trend continues into Friday and Saturday across New Mexico. Breezy winds will likely return as well by Saturday afternoon, helping to bring in the warmer weather. But this is all ahead of another storm that will start moving in this weekend. Rain chances will actually return to eastern New Mexico Friday afternoon, with a better chance for showers and storms on Saturday as a storm system dives into New Mexico. This will bring more widespread chances for rain by early next week. It will also send in another strong cold front bringing another blast of cooler air into the state by Monday.
