A 32-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of murder on Sunday, Oct. 27, after Rialto police say she drove drunk and caused a collision that killed a pedestrian.
Laura Barajas of Rialto was being held without the possibility of bail at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga. Superior Court records do not indicate she had been charged as of Tuesday.
Rialto Police Sgt. Dan Smith said a 50-year-old man who was on a sidewalk waiting to cross the street died when Barajas’ car struck him after the two-car crash. San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office records show 50-year-old David M. Guerrero of Rialto died Sunday in a traffic collision.
The collision happened just before 6:26 p.m.
Smith said Barajas was driving a Dodge Caravan south on Riverside Avenue when she attempted to make a left turn onto Etiwanda Avenue. Smith said she failed to yield to oncoming traffic by turning in front of an Audi A4.
The collision sent Barajas’ van onto the sidewalk where the pedestrian stood. The man was taken to a hospital, where he died.
Barajas was treated for injuries before being booked into jail. Smith said she was under the influence of alcohol.
The driver of the Audi was not injured, Smith said. His 2-year-old son had minor cuts to his face.
