HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is hosting a Día de los Muertos event on Saturday, celebrating Hispanic culture and allowing guests to honor lost loved ones at a community altar. Día de los Muertos, or The Day of the Dead, is a holiday with Mexican origins that is celebrated between Oct. 31 and Nov. 2 each year. During this time, families welcome back the souls of loved ones who have passed for a joyous celebration involving food, drink, music and dancing. Lewis Ginter will hold a community event for Día de los Muertos from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2. There will be food, crafts and a community altar. Attendees are encouraged to bring photos of loved ones they have lost so they may place them on the altar, which will be located by the Bloemendaal House on Crepe Myrtle Walk. From 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., there will be a bilingual storytime. Artist David Amoroso will also demo papel picado, or Mexican folk art papercraft involving cutting elaborate designs into tissue paper. Additionally, there will be a Taco Bar on the cafe's patio, sugar skull face-painting with artist Vanessa Hoggins and more. The Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will be on-site offering information and other activities. For more details, visit the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden's website.
