DARTMOUTH, Mass. (WLNE) — The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth announced a free tuition program for select in-state students on Tuesday. This initiative, titled “the UMass Dartmouth Deal,” will issue free tuition and mandatory fees for in-state undergraduate students with an annual family income of $75,000 or less. Starting in the 2025 fall semester, eligible students will receive free tuition, fee support, and on-campus housing. UMass Dartmouth said the plan aims to allow students with financial needs to have access to a college education by reducing these financial barriers. “Accessible and affordable education is the hand-up that many in our community need as they pursue their highest potential,” Representative Chris Markey said. “This commitment to our community will provide our young people the tools to achieve their brightest future.” Significant university aid and the MASSGrant Plus program from the Healey-Driscoll Administration was credited for the creation of the new deal, according to UMass President Marty Meehan.  UMass Dartmouth predicts about 1,500 students will qualify for the plan. “UMass Dartmouth is committed to ensuring that Massachusetts students from working families have the opportunity to get a world-class education at UMass Dartmouth, ” Chancellor Mark Fuller said. Additionally, students will have access to financial literacy workshops and scholarships to aid with books fees and housing. UMass Dartmouth said students do not have to sign up for the program and will be automatically enrolled if they are eligible.
