NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Halloween is creeping around the corner! With a few days left to go, you might be solidifying your plans for a night of spooky vibes and trick-or-treating. Taylor Swift donates to Second Harvest Food Bank after New Orleans stop on Eras Tour As you grab your costumes and last-minute bags of candy, Louisiana law enforcement agencies are reminding residents of a few tips to keep yourself and your children safe while enjoying the festivities. Officials with the Louisiana State Police offered the following tips for parents with trick-or-treating children: Make sure your child remains visible by carrying flashlights or glowsticks and wearing reflective clothes. "Remember that masks can restrict vision and breathing, restricting sight of oncoming vehicles. Face painting is a safer option." Plan your route in neighborhoods you know with streets that are well-lit. Walk on sidewalks Make sure your child knows their address, important phone numbers and how to call 911 in the event of an emergency. Walk with children to make sure they do not enter a stranger's home or vehicle. Check all candy. New flights heading to New Orleans for Mardi Gras 2025 The Kenner Police Department has also offered tips to keep your home and those around you safe during Halloween celebrations: Replace burned-out lights to make your home and surrounding areas more visible. Remove possible tripping hazards like garden hoses, toys, lawn decorations and bikes. Keep pets inside. Lock car doors and park in safe areas. Report any suspicious activity to police. Turn off all lights and blow out candles when the night ends. The St. James Parish Sheriff's Office is reminding drivers to take extra caution, look out for trick-or-treaters and get rid of any distractions. LSP officials are also reminding adults participating in Halloween events to have a plan and arrange a safe ride home through a designated driver, calling a taxi or using a ride-share service.
