It was another delightful late October day across Central and Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday. With filtered sunshine and a gusty southwest wind at 20 to 25 miles per hour helping to push warmer air into the region, afternoon highs surged into the upper 70s with a few lower 80s here and there. Temperatures were a solid 15 degrees above average for this time of the year so for those wanting to hang on to some late summer-like warmth, you’ve definitely gotten your wish. More unseasonably warm weather is on tap for the commonwealth heading into the mid-week as high pressure sitting over the Carolinas continues to pump the very warm air by late October standards into the Ohio Valley. South winds will remain gusty around 20 to 25 miles per hour along with lots of sunshine which may give a few locations a chance to run to near record highs. Afternoon highs should roll back into the upper 70s and low 80s so it should feel pretty awesome to be outdoors on Wednesday. Looking ahead to Halloween as we close out the month on Thursday, a slow moving frontal system will slide into the Ohio Valley increasing our rain chances. On one hand this represents the best widespread rain chance we’ve seen in about a month so we could use it. The downside of course is the potential timing of the rain arriving with trick or treating set up for Thursday evening. At this point it looks to be very close with the anticipated showers and a few rumbles of thunder arriving late afternoon and into the evening hours but keep in mind it could be delayed slightly given the slow movement of the front. It will be another warm and breezy day with highs in the mid-70s. Rainfall totals could be around a half inch, which would be great given how dry it has been of late. Flipping the calendar to November on Friday we should see a few linger showers during the first half of the day before drier air works into the region. It should feel more like fall as afternoon highs back down into the mid-60s with a north to northwest flow bringing in cooler air behind the front. The beginning of the weekend looks dry and pleasant before another slow moving storm system works toward the Ohio valley. The model data isn’t synced up with the arrival of the next round of showers so we are looking at a low-end chance late Sunday with slightly higher chances Monday and into Election Day as temperatures climb back into the 70s for afternoon highs. Don’t forget this weekend is the time change as Daylight Saving Time ends and Standard Time returns at 2am eastern on Sunday. Remember we “fall back” as clocks get set back 1 hour at that time. Of course you get an extra hour of sleep with that change but it also impacts our sunrise/sunset times going forward so come late Sunday afternoon the sun will be setting just after 5:30pm.
