INDOT decreasing speed limit on stretch of U.S. Highway 40 in Plainfield
Oct 29, 2024
PLAINFIELD, Ind. — Drivers in Plainfield will have to get used to slowing down a bit on one stretch of U.S. Highway 40.
According to a press release from the Indiana Department of Transportation, the speed limit on U.S. Highway 40 between Vandalia and Ventura Boulevards will drop from 55 mph to 45 mph on Nov. 6. Per INDOT, the speed limit change will be permanent.
The decrease will be in effect both eastbound and westbound on U.S. Highway 40. INDOT indicated the speed limit change is intended to "help enhance safety in the area."
The new speed limit is being implemented about five miles from the site of a deadly crash involving the Plainfield Police Department. Previous reporting indicates a PPD officer was chasing a suspect — Bryan Goodmon — when he struck a vehicle occupied by 78-year-old Barbara Williams and 79-year-old Bennie Williams at the intersection of U.S. Highway 40 and Smith Road.
Barbara and Bennie Williams died in the crash, and the PPD officer was transported from the scene to a local hospital. Goodmon continued to flee the area after the officer chasing him crashed.
Goodmon was arrested on Sept. 16 — more than two weeks after the deadly crash.

The PPD officer involved in the chase — Logan Westerfield — resigned from his position after the crash.
Goodmon — who has been charged with resisting law enforcement with a vehicle causing death or catastrophic injury — is still incarcerated at the Hendricks County Jail. His next appearance in court is scheduled for Nov. 4 at 1 p.m.
