On this episode of LNN Spotlight, Reporter/Editor Belén Dumont speaks with Hispanic Health Council Policy Advocacy Manager Megan Scharrer on best practices to connect with potential Hispanic/Latino voters and efforts to civically engage local Hispanic/Latino communities year-round.
“Research has shown that Latinos who are eligible to vote are not voting because of lack of civic education…and barriers to go out to vote,” said Scharrer.
In the 2020 presidential election, about 50% of Hartford’s eligible voters cast their ballot —compared to the state average of 80%. During the 2022 state election, around 26% Hartford residents voted, with the state average being 58%. As Election Day quickly approaches, Scharrer shares about the Hispanic Health Council’s efforts to civically engage residents across Hartford.
“Our efforts for outreach have included voter education to community members and staff, social media campaigns, door-to-door canvassing, and sharing voter registration materials,” explained Sharrer.
The Hispanic Health Council has trained all of its staff to register eligible voters and engage in conversations with clients about voting, shared Sharrer. She emphasized how understanding and respecting Latino culture plays a crucial role in these outreach efforts.
“We have stressed the importance of individual voter education and relationship building with this campaign. So, it’s really important to really talk one-on-one with the community—they want to connect.”
