HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — 50 shots were fired in a Hay Street neighborhood in High Point on Sunday.
Police charged 19-year-old Nahzier Dunlap and a 16-year-old with attempted murder. The 16-year-old is a minor, so their name won’t be released.
Investigators say what makes this case stand out are the ages of the suspects.
“It heightens the dangers that our officers face because you’re dealing with someone who is not as mature,” High Point Police Chief Curtis Cheeks III said.
Cheeks says the teen violence has to stop.
“One is too many. We talk about normal activities for youth in our community. Shooting a gun is not it. Even ... pulling the trigger one time in a residential neighborhood is too much for any of our youth to be involved in,” Cheeks said.
Police say after the shooting, the teens drove away and police followed. The chase ended when the suspect vehicle crashed at West English Road and Dorothy Street.
Inside the car, officers say they found three handguns and multiple shell casings. Along Hay Street, two homes and a car were damaged by the gunfire.
Cheeks says there's a new state law that will crack down on teens who commit violent crimes.
“The rise in the age will change come Dec. 1. That change will be that our 16 and 17-year-olds out commuting A through E felonies such as indiscriminate shooting will be processed initially as an adult,” Cheeks said.
During the investigation, officers determined the suspects and people in another vehicle were shooting at each other along Hay Street.
Police say this is under investigation.
