Ward County poll workers train for Election Day

MINOT, ND (KXNET) — Ensuring fairness for all voters — that's what close to 100 poll workers in Ward County will be doing this week for early voting as well as on Election Day.
With nine voting locations across the county and three new voting centers this year, as well as the Ward County Administration Building, poll workers are needed to ensure that the election goes smoothly.
Ward County Treasurer and Auditor, Marisa Haman, says being a poll worker attracts a wide variety of people.
"We have a lot of people who have done it for years and years and years, we have some people stepping out. A lot of times, it's one of those things where someone's like 'Hey, you should work' and gets them into it or sometimes I use people who have frustration with an election that they've voted in or something like that use that opportunity to say hey come get involved and you can kinda go through the process and help be on the other side of it," said Haman.
Ward County poll workers are trained for half a day on what voters should have on hand when they show up to vote.

"We want them to understand the proper forms of identification people need when they're coming to the polling locations. All the laws, all the rules, our security protocols, things like that. We do a lot of hands-on training where they get to look through the equipment they will be using on Election Day and make sure they're comfortable with those things ahead of time," said Haman.
Haman says that her poll workers are extensively trained on proper forms of identification as that is the biggest issue for voters at polling locations.
"The biggest thing is the ID requirements, that's the thing the voters forget to do most often. Mostly updating their driver's license, so we do touch on the four forms that they can use in North Dakota, which is your North Dakota driver's license, North Dakota non-driver's license, the tribal ID, or long-term care certificate," said Haman.
Poll workers are also trained on proper set up of the polling location as well as making sure folks are receiving the right ballot, Haman always lets her workers know that election day is going to be a long day.
"I prepare them that it's going to be a long day you're going to be there from 6 in the morning to whenever you get everything done so it is a long day for those workers," said Haman.
