AUSTIN (KXAN) — New friendships have hatched at a Buda senior living facility, as the center welcomed a set of pet chickens.
Buda Oaks Assisted Living and Memory Care recently lost their community chicken, Princess Lay-ah, who helped provide companionship and pet therapy for facility residents. Her eggs were also donated to a local food bank to spread her love beyond the senior living center.

Following Princess Lay-ah's passing, eight-year-old Ansley Price decided to step in and donate two Silkie chickens that she hatched earlier this year. The facility gave the chickens a warm welcome, literally rolling out the red carpet for their arrival.
"We'll miss her dearly, but we are beyond excited to welcome our new feathered friends and continue the tradition," Buda Oaks' Community Relations Director Crista Wallace said in a release. "Ansley’s kindness has made a meaningful impact, and we can't wait to see how our new chickens enrich our residents' lives."
Buda Oaks staff credited Princess Lay-ah with laying the groundwork for chicken-raising at the facility, offering interactions and routines for residents to engage in. In her memory, Buda Oaks will continue the tradition of donating all future eggs to an area food bank.
