BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – Bernalillo County's Animal Care Services and Resource Center will reopen Tuesday following the start of remediation work after the discovery of black mold in some areas of the facility.
Over the weekend, contractors began remediation work on two kennel rooms which house approximately 36 dogs. Contaminated materials were removed and both spaces were cleaned, disinfected, and fogged for approximately 24 hours. Air tests also came back clear, allowing the facility to resume normal operations in those spaces.

Other areas of the building, where mold was also found, including the main hallway and surrounding rooms, will take more time to be cured and will remain closed off until remediation can be completed, the county said.
Animal Care Services is encouraging community members that are unable to adopt to sign up to foster. Those who are interested in becoming a foster companion can submit an interest card, here.
“We want to thank the community members who have already stepped up to foster 28 dogs during this unexpected situation. It’s not easy work, but your compassion has made all the difference,” said Animal Care Director Misha Goodman in a news release. “I also want to thank our incredible staff for their continued hard work towards providing continued services as best we can.”
