[1] Charges dropped against former NMSP officer accused of sexual assault - The sexual assault charges against a former NMSP officer have been dropped. Isiah Cheromiah was arrested after a woman came forward saying he sexually assaulted her when they were both soldiers with the New Mexico National Guard in Las Vegas. Cheromiah was supposed to go to trial this week but an expert witness for the prosecutors deemed the alleged victim wasn’t credible and had a history of making up allegations. The charges were dropped without prejudice meaning they can be refiled.
[2] Albuquerque man convicted of killing ex-girlfriend in 2022 - Monday, a jury convicted Jonathan Martinez for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Yasmin Marquez in 2022. Investigators said social media conversations showed Martinez threatened to kill Marquez prior to her disappearance. According to investigators, Martinez’s location data showed that he traveled to the Jemez Mountains and then to Corrales where Marquez’s car was found burned the following day. Six weeks later Marquez’s remains were found in the Jemez Mountains off Highway 550. Martinez is facing life in prison.
[3] Wintry weather to the north & widespread dust around New Mexico - The low pressure system approaching the Four Corners is bringing in not only some precipitation with more clouds, but cooler and windier conditions. Southwesterly winds will rise even more, producing damage with more-widespread blowing dust. As the trough of low pressure quickly moves through to the north later today, colder air will ensue tonight and after a calmer but cooler day tomorrow afternoon.
[4] UNM Hospital breaks ground on new Children’s Psychiatric Center - University of New Mexico Hospital leaders broke ground on the new Children's Psychiatric Center. Plans for the 32,500-square-foot building include 52 beds and a four-bed unit for severe cases which UNMH did not have before. The new center is expected to take two years to be completed. Funding for the project comes from a higher education GO Bond approved by voters in 2022.
[5] ‘He protected her’: New Mexico dog burned while shielding other dog in fire - Nearly a week ago Jennifer Weesner and Chris Hinz's Rio Rancho home caught on fire. Nobody was home except the owners three pets. Miller, the nearly four-year-old yellow lab is credited with saving a smaller dog, Amelia, inside the home. The couple said firefighters found Miller shielding Amelia from the flames. All three of the pets made it out alive, but Miller is now suffering from second and third-degree burns as well as lung damage from smoke inhalation.
