MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Every Tuesday as part of our Greater Memphis on a Mission series, we highlight organizations making Memphis better. This week, we caught up with a group that believes in the power of the arts.
When Germantown Performing Arts Center reached out to Sherri Stepter, the music director and activities coordinator for Southern Ave Charter School, about partnering, it was an automatic yes.
"Our school not only thrives on academics but the creative and performing arts is a very important part of our charter," Stepter said. "It exposes them to different types of performances that they may not get a chance to see on their own."

GPAC presents high-quality artistic endeavors to educate, engage & transform. They also have numerous arts education programs. Plus they take the show on the road to partnering schools as part of their Peanut Butter and Jam Family Series which is designed to introduce children to a variety of genres.
"Kids who are exposed to the arts do better in math. They become better communicators. They're better readers. They're better students, they have self-discipline," said Parke Kennedy, GPAC director of development.
"About two weeks ago, we had Massey Tate, which is a blues and soul band, and they took some of the familiar tunes that we like, and they took like wheels on the bus and put it, you know, bluesy groove. So the kids really loved that," Stepter said. "They get to sing along. They get to get up and dance. They have like, questions and answers, like they can ask about the instruments or about the music, or they can ask artists, how long have you been singing?"
The Peanut Butter and Jam Family Series means a lot to Mrs. Stepter and Southern Ave Charter School.

"Some of them may not get a chance to go to a concert outside of their school. So it's like we're bringing it to them," Stepter said.
That is why Brown Missionary Baptist Church and the Mid-South Genesis CDC donated $1,000 to the Germantown Performing Arts Center because exposing kids to the arts will always set a path to success.
