LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – A Lexington family is beginning the difficult process of rebuilding after a fire, early Sunday morning, destroyed their home off Tanforan Drive, near Alumni Drive, leaving the back deck in rubble and the interior badly charred.
The fire broke out around 2 a.m. Most of the family was asleep, but Luis Lara, the only one awake, quickly alerted his family, ensuring everyone made it out safely.
“I just heard popping, and then I opened the curtains up, I just saw a big fire, my porch was already on fire by the time I realized, and you know I just, I didn’t really think much, I just ran upstairs and woke my family up, my mom my grandma and told them to get out of the house,” said Luis.
Now, the Lara-Rojo family faces the task of recovery. Luis’s mother, Raquel, shared that the fire destroyed everything including irreplaceable items like family photos and childhood trophies.
“We don’t even have time to grab shoes for the kids, or anything we just get them pajamas and that’s it, we didn’t have time for anything,” said Raquel.
The family is seeking community support through a GoFundMe for essential items like clothes and furniture. Raquel welcomes donations of other necessities, as well.
They’re also in need of a new home, as they are currently staying with relatives. Raquel adds that explaining the devastation to her children has been a challenge in itself.
“Most of them, they are like, they come and they see, ‘oh my God that’s our house, so can we go back to the house… just to explain to them what is going on is very hard, because they don’t understand, they don’t know what is going on,” she said, “it just breaks my heart, it breaks my heart to see my kids like that,” said Raquel.
