Record warmth is possible today with high temperatures in the upper 70s and lower 80s. Gusty winds and dry conditions lead to elevated fire danger. Rain is in the forecast for Halloween but the outlook improves for trick-or-treaters. It will be an unseasonably warm day with temperatures that could meet record levels. The record for the date, in Indianapolis, is 81° set back in 1922. We could be there this afternoon. Temperatures will rise to the upper 70s and lower 80s. A Red Flag Warning has been issued for the northern half of the state. It will be in effect from 1 PM to 8 PM today. This means there is an elevated fire risk today. Dry conditions and gusty winds could lead to fires spreading rapidly. Gusts up to 40 mph are possible. Outdoor burning is not recommended. 44 counties in the state are reporting active Burn Bans as of Tuesday morning. Many of these are in central Indiana and more may be added to this list. The Halloween rain forecast is improving for trick-or-treaters. We need the rain and we will get it. Rain chances are best from the mid morning through the early afternoon. We will be trending drier for the evening with most locations that are likely rain-free for trick-or-treating. However, a few stray showers are possible. These would be most likely in eastern and our southeastern counties. Check back for updates as we fine tune the forecast for Halloween. We have another shot at 80° Wednesday before high temperatures cool to the 60s for the weekend.
