USPS recommends mailin ballots be sent 'soon' to make it for 2024 election

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A week out from Election Day, the United States Postal Service recommends voters who choose to vote by mail “do so soon,” according to a news release published Monday.
While Tuesday, Nov. 5 is Election Day, Nevada law allows counties to accept mail-in ballots postmarked on or by Election Day until Nov. 9. The Nevada Supreme Court ruled Monday that ballots without postmarks can also be counted until Thursday, Nov. 8.

“As we anticipate an uptick of ballots in the mail over the coming days, Postal Service employees are working to ensure the ballots of every individual who chooses to vote by mail are delivered quickly and securely,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “As in past elections, the Postal Service is ready to deliver your ballot on time. But don’t delay. If you choose to vote by mail, please mail early as every day counts.”
The Postal Service estimated that 99.89% of mail-in ballots will be delivered to their respective counting sites within a week. On average, USPS estimates it takes about a day and a half to make the delivery.
A week out from Election Day, USPS was in the midst of “deploying extraordinary measures,” which included extra delivering and pickups and other processes “designed to accelerate and enhance the delivery of Ballot Mail,” a spokesperson said.
As of Sunday night, about 400 mail-in ballots had arrived at the Clark County Election Department without signatures. Nearly 4,600 ballots had signatures that did not match the one on file.
The Election Department will notify voters if there is an issue with their signature, however, a voter must have a phone number or email on file to be notified. Voters have until 5 p.m. on the sixth day after Election Day to provide a signature confirmation, Nevada law states -- with the Veterans Day holiday, that date this year is Tuesday, Nov. 12.
As of Sunday night, the county had processed more than 229,000 mail-in ballots – about half of the expected total.
Close margins often decide Nevada elections: In 2022, Nevada Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo won by about 15,000 votes; Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto won by about 8,000 votes. In 2020, President Joe Biden won by about 33,000 votes.
