Standoff in SE Austin Monday afternoon ends peacefully after 2 1/2 hours

A standoff that started early Monday afternoon and involved the accidental discharge of a firearm, came to a peaceful ending after over two hours.
According to a release Tuesday morning from Austin Police Chief David McKichan, Austin officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Ninth Avenue SE at around 3:52 p.m. for a mental health call involving an adult male with a firearm.
The prolonged negotiation with the individual lasted approximately two and a half hours, during which the individual accidentally fired off one round of a 22-caliber rifle.
The subject eventually surrendered to officers and was transported to Mayo Clinic Health Systems-Austin for mental health and welfare reasons.
