One person was killed and two others wounded in a shooting at an apartment complex in Westchester County on Monday night, police said.
One adult and two children were shot in the attack in Somers, cops said. Authorities did not identify the deceased victim, but WCBS reported it was one of the children.
Fernando Jimenez, 40, was captured Tuesday morning after a 12-hour manhunt shook the community of Somers, about 35 miles north of Central Park.
“We know there was a domestic violence event that happened last night,” Somers Town Supervisor Rob Scorrano told reporters at a Tuesday morning press conference. “Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and to the victims.”
Authorities did not describe the relationship between the suspect and victims, other than to say they were familiar with each other.
The manhunt for Jimenez rocked the town of Somers Monday and into Tuesday morning, as residents were ordered to shelter in place and Putnam Valley Central School District canceled all classes for the day.
“We are in contact with the New York State Police who continue significant police activity throughout Putnam Valley,” Superintendent Jeremy Luft wrote in a message to the community. “Some residents remain under shelter-in-place orders. After speaking with law enforcement, the decision has been made to close all Putnam Valley Schools today.”
State police said Jimenez was likely armed before he was captured, but they did not share any details of his apprehension.
The nearby Lakeland Central School District and Mahopac Central School District were locked down Tuesday morning, allowing classes to continue but preventing anyone from entering buildings, according to the Rockland/Westchester Journal News. Those lockdowns were lifted after Jimenez’s arrest.
