Lake Catholic vs. Avon Lake
What: Division III regional semifinal
When: 7 p.m., Oct. 30
Where: Medina, 777 East Union Street
Records: Lake Catholic 17-1-1, Avon Lake 15-3-2
What’s next: Winner advances to a regional final at noon Nov. 3 against Sandusky Perkins or Lima Shawnee at Huron.
What to look for: The express that pulls out of the Bellflower and 306 station otherwise known as Lake Catholic continued its stampeding trajectory with a dominating 5-0 win over Marlington to earn its fifth district title since 2009. Good luck finding a weakness in this Cougars’ side, because it can hit you in many ways. It has the talisman in Harley Forkins, the smooth and electric senior striker now up to 47 goals and 13 assists. It has the dynamic playmaker in Alex Miljanovic (22-22). It has the spine in the middle of the park with Brandon Rangel (14-19). It has the stalwart at center back in Owen Pesek. It has complementary depth. It has the combo work, pace, width, spacing, set-piece danger and defensive-third prowess to be a tall task for anyone. All of that noted, this is a tricky one for Lake Catholic. Because Avon Lake has plenty to offer, too. Senior Brendan Sheehan (26-15) is a closedown nightmare out wide with his touch-on-a-string ability. J.P. Gannon (14-11), Luke Bellenir (11-9) and Aaron Richardson (8-14) are all seasoned standouts on their own merits. Simply put, you cannot take a single touch for granted, especially in midfield, against Coach Pete Klepek’s side. The Shoremen will make you work for everything. Because of how tough Avon Lake makes things centrally, it feels like a match in which outside backs could be helpful for Lake Catholic, say Marko Viskovic coming up from left back on a timely overlap. This could be one of the better regional semifinals regardless of division in Northeast Ohio if both of these sides are up for it.
