Family for John O’Keefe argue wrongful death lawsuit against Karen Read should move forward

BROCKTON, Mass. (WLNE) — Family for John O’Keefe were in the courtroom Monday to argue that the wrongful death lawsuit against Karen Read should move forward.
Read is accused of murdering O’Keefe back in 2022 after hitting him with her SUV and leaving him for dead.
The jury could not come to a verdict during the summer, but the re-trial will happen in January of 2025.
O’Keefe’s family has since filed a lawsuit against Read and the two bars the two visited on the night O’Keefe died.
According to WCVB, the family’s attorneys argued that Read can’t have it both ways, getting widespread media coverage for her high-profile criminal case while claiming she isn’t available to be deposed for the civil case.
Meanwhile, attorneys for Read and the two bars argued to delay the wrongful death lawsuit until her criminal trial is completed.
Monday’s hearing ultimately ended without a decision from the judge who will soon have to decide when the case can move forward.
Read was not present for the hearing.
