Oct 29, 2024
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Today, high fire risk conditions continue across Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.
Local officials are urging caution as dry, windy weather increases the potential for fire spread.
In Massachusetts, brush fires have burned more than 400 acres, and the dry conditions are creating a similar threat here in Rhode Island.
The National Weather Service has warned of an elevated fire weather conditions within the state and throughout southern New England, where dry ground and a lack of rain have set the stage for wildfires.
The fire in Salem has burned approximately 130 acres alone.
National Guard helicopters continue water drops today to try to douse the fire which has been burning since Saturday.
The region is in a rain deficit this month, having received less than a quarter of an inch compared to the normal 3.79 inches.
The result is abnormally dry conditions that are impacting crops and creating dangerous fire risks.
In Rhode Island, crews are on alert as increasing winds and low humidity continue to elevate the fire threat.
Officials have warned that light showers expected this week will not be enough to reduce the risk, as fire danger remains high throughout the area.
