OAK ISLAND, N.C. (WNCN) -- A wildfire on the North Carolina coast closed roads to and from an island in Brunswick County late this week.
The large wildfire broke out Friday, closing roads onto Oak Island, according to the Oak Island Police Department.
Friday afternoon, all traffic to the island was detoured to Long Beach Road and the G.V. Barbee Bridge after the fire north of the Swain's Cut Bridge.
Also for hours Friday, traffic was not allowed to leave the island on E.F. Middleton Boulevard, which is N.C. 906, police said.

Heavy smoke was coming from a brush fire just west of E.F. Middleton Boulevard, near Maxwell Drive and the west entrances of St. James Plantation, according to police.
On Saturday, the problems returned with "temperature inversion from cooling overnight" forcing smoke to remain at ground level, officers said.

Overnight Friday into Saturday, police cautioned people near the smoke with respiratory illness.
By later on Saturday, the smoke had lifted and regular traffic could resume, police said.
No one was injured in the fire, which burned about 12 acres.
The Oak Island Fire Department, Southport Fire Department, and the NC Forestry Service responded to the brush fire.
