'Worst day of their life': Fresno officials react after sergeant shot on duty

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - The Fresno Police Department and city officials are now speaking out about the sergeant who was shot on duty over the weekend.
“[The officers] faced just probably the worst day of their life on Saturday, and when I visited the sergeant yesterday in the hospital, he told me he was glad it was him that was shot instead of his officers,” Interim Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto said.
Police say Andy Morales stabbed and shot Mario Ternora to death in a Platt Avenue home on Saturday evening.
A ShotSpotter alarm alerted the police department to the shooting shortly before 5:30 p.m.
After officers had investigated the scene for about an hour, they say the suspect, Morales, returned and shot at a sergeant who was sitting in his squad car.
Police say they are shocked the suspect returned while officers were still on the scene.
“So rare that I couldn't even give you a percentage, not something that we see a lot of,” Casto said.
The sergeant’s name has not been released, but the department says he was shot in the leg.
They say the injured officer chased Morales for about a block before Morales crashed his car and tried to run away.
Police say the sergeant and Morales shot at each other for about 47 seconds before other officers joined.
Casto says Morales’ behavior shows he intended to hurt the sergeant.
“Not only was he firing rounds at him, he was repositioning himself multiple times, going to the ground, standing up, finding places of cover and concealment to prevent himself from being struck by gunfire,” Casto said.
Officers shot Morales seven times, killing him.
The sergeant was shot multiple times in the legs, although the exact number of shots has not been released.
Casto says the thing that amazes her most is the fact that the sergeant had the presence of mind to call an ambulance for himself and the suspect before going into shock.
Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer says he knows the sergeant personally, and says, that while the physical wounds will heal, the sergeant’s emotional wounds may take longer.
“We're here today as a result of God's grace, God's grace that is allowing us to talk about a police officer who was wounded in the line of duty versus a police officer who was killed in the line of duty,” Dyer said.
Dyer says he spoke with the sergeant in the hospital and reports that he looks forward to returning to work when he’s back on his feet.
