SHELBOURNE FALLS, Mass. (WWLP) - It's been eight years since the death of 9-year-old Summer Steele of Plainfield who died after her backpack was caught in the doors of her school bus.
Summer's loved ones have been honoring her life by holding an annual pumpkin carving in memory of the third grader who loved hearts and the color purple.

Her mother told 22News the grief will be lifelong and the family is thankful for the outpouring of support, especially for Summer's sister.
While the pandemic has slowed any progress, Summer's mother says that they are still advocating for "Summer's Law" to be passed. The law would require sensors on school buses to prevent a tragedy like this from happening again.
