FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Fresno Police's interim chief will be providing more information on Monday about a weekend shooting in which a police sergeant was struck by gunfire, a suspect was killed, and a homicide victim was found.
Police say on Saturday at around 5:20 p.m. they responded to a two-round ShotSpotter activation near Platt Avenue and 8th Street, near Jackson Elementary School.
‘Completely unexpected’: Sergeant ambushed in Fresno
Officers investigated for about an hour before a suspect returned to the scene and fired shots at an officer while he was in his vehicle. The injured sergeant then pursued the suspect vehicle for a short distance before the suspect crashed. The suspect then got out of the vehicle and fired more shots at the sergeant and two nearby officers— who responded after hearing shots nearby.
Investigators report after multiple shots were exchanged the suspect and sergeant were both struck by gunfire. First aid was rendered to both, who were eventually transported to a local hospital.
Detectives say the suspect was pronounced dead at the hospital and the sergeant sustained injuries to his lower extremities. The sergeant's condition was described as stable.
