GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) - Houses of Honor has been putting on their annual "Salute to Service" event for 8 years, with support from the community growing every year. On Sunday, Houses of Honor Founder, Cathy Kohlbeck, and her dozens of volunteers hosted the event for area veterans at Stadium View, where more than 300 people attended. "Hearing their trials that they experienced when coming back into civilian life really touched my heart. It's why I wanted to give back." Kohlbeck said being able to make an impact on the lives of local veterans over the years has been a dream come true. "We started the group and we've grown ever since and now we have over 50 businesses that provide their services at a discount to community heroes," she explained. Kohlbeck also told Local 5 she couldn't do it without her program partners and team of volunteers who share her passion for providing support to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. "It's very heart-touching and it's just good to give back to the people who have done so much for us," said Andrea Knorr, the Houses of Honor Ambassador of Veteran Outreach. "It's just been a great experience and even thanking them today you can tell how much they respect that and appreciate it so it's just an honor," said Houses of Honor Program Partner Kathy Parker. From bucket raffles to a silent auction, Julia Wesa, another program partner, said Houses of Honor is unique because the funds raised go entirely to the veterans. Wisconsin Public Service crews return after successfully aiding Florida from hurricane damage "Two of the folks that are gonna be recipients of the funds from today that we raise don't know it," exclaimed Wesa. "It's been a lot of fun to know that what we can give back is growing." Organizers said the non-profit was able to raise $25,000 for two local veteran groups last year, so this year they hope to surpass that.
