EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) -- An El Paso Army veteran is getting a pretty cool gift through a special program designed to thank and honor veterans for their service. Danny De La Torre was selected to receive a free roof for his East El Paso home from Escalante Roofing as part of the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project. Photos by Shaun Felice/KTSM Through a partnership with Purple Heart Homes, De La Torre was selected and approved as the recipient for the roof replacement. The Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project is a nationwide effort to show gratitude and honor the veterans who served our country and the families who support them, according to a news release. Since the inception of this program in 2016, more than 600 military members have received new roofs, according to program organizers. The Owens Corning Foundation is donating roofing materials and Escalante Roofing is donating the labor. Escalante Roofing is a family-owned El Paso company that was started in 1983.
