(COLORADO)—With Halloween night a few days away, the Teller County Sheriff's Office (TCSO) Animal Control Officers are reminding the community and pet parents to be careful and think twice before offering any special Halloween treats to their dogs at home. Dog parents are particularly familiar with what a bite of chocolate or more than a few can do to their pet — which can lead to not such a spooky fun time. Chocolate is widely known for being toxic and dangerous to dogs, some symptoms a pet can experience after eating it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, agitation, high heart rate, and elevated blood pressure. Chocolate isn't the only candy dog parents need to watch out for this Halloween, other ingredients that can be dangerous or toxic include: Xylitol: This type of sugar can be found in many sugar-free candies and gum, which is also toxic to dogs. Raisins: These may be tiny and seem harmless, but just one raisin can be fatal to a dog. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, dehydration, and lethargy. Hard Candy: Dogs can easily choke on this. When mixed with saliva it becomes slippery and can become a choking hazard. Sugar: This can cause an upset stomach in dogs. Instead of treating your dog to Halloween candy, it may be best to just treat them with their favorite — safe and non-toxic — snack. TCSO recommends keeping candy away from your dog's reach and telling trick-or-treaters not to give your dog any candy. In addition, cutting up any candy bags before throwing them away may keep your pet and others safe. If your pooch eats Halloween candy accidentally, make sure to contact a veterinarian or animal poison control immediately.
