HANFORD, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A teenager previously accused of the shooting death of a 23-year-old in Hanford has been determined no longer a suspect, the Hanford Police Department announced Sunday. On Oct. 23 around 1 p.m. police say they responded to a reported drive-by shooting near 10th Avenue and Lacey Boulevard. Upon arrival, responding officers reported a white Honda with several bullet holes on the driver's side stopped at the southeast corner of the intersection. Inside was 23-year-old Cruz David Avalos unresponsive with gunshot wounds. Hanford Police names drive-by shooting victim, teen suspect arrested Investigators say the officers immediately removed Avalos from the vehicle and performed life-saving measures before he was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Detectives identified the involved suspect vehicle as a black Nissan Versa and through witness statements, identified a 16-year-old boy as a suspect. The teenager was arrested the next morning after being a victim of a shooting at the Santa Rosa Rancheria on Oct. 24. On Sunday Oct. 27, Hanford police say their investigation led them to the discovery that the 16-year-old is not the suspect in the death of Avalos. The teen however remains in custody on suspicion of firearm charges. Investigators are actively working to determine the circumstances leading up to the shooting and ask anyone with any information regarding this case to contact Hanford Police Detective K. Smith at 559-585-2540.
